MY FAVE BEAUTY PRODUCTS – JUNE 2022

This post is the first of my new monthly series, where I write about my favourite new products I discovered in the month (it’s very self explanatory – I know, I could’ve saved a few characters there). Anyway, here are five of my fave beauty products from June!

Product links are at the bottom of the post!

Kylie Cosmetics High Gloss in ‘Always Shining’

As a lover of all things glitzy, this lipgloss is literally me in a tube. It holds real specs of glitter, and it makes my lips look ultra sparkly! So many lipglosses I’ve tried have failed to do this. It would often appear to be smeared and smudged shimmer – similar to the finishes of eyeshadow. Just gloss no sparkles? I find this to be quite boring. But this one has clear individual glitter specs and makes my makeup look super pretty. I wear this in my full face classic glam looks, my girlish sweet glam looks, and even when I’m not wearing any makeup! Its perfect for non makeup days because the glitter compensates for everything. Although I’m literally obsessed with the sparkly shade of ‘Always Shining’, I will be will be trying more High Gloss shades because the texture is fab. It is gloss that stays on your lips all day. I’m sure that if you ram your face with a burger (or eat any equally invasive foods), the lipgloss will still be there!

Skin of Mine Satin Concealer in ‘Biscuit’

Recently I’ve discovered a new way to do my natural makeup. After years of re-buying the crappy ‘The Ordinary Serum Foundation’, thinking its quality will magically change (or perhaps I’ve just been buying the wrong shade), and months of using a high coverage matte finish concealer (stupid, I know) for natural barely there makeup, my quest has finally been fulfilled. Thanks to this stunning concealer I’m able to achieve a flawless non-makeup look. I simply do my full a.m. skincare routine to get glowy clean skin, and then touch up my under-eyes lightly with this concealer. Its hydrating finish means I am able to keep a consistent texture with my skin, and let it breathe better. What I mean by this is that I’m not bombarding my face with a foundation, or caky concealer. For a law student that barely sleeps, this product has been a life saver. Also, as the weather is getting hotter I realised how its better to wear less makeup than I actually have to. A light dab of this concealer and the Kylie Gloss (and some strokes of Kiko mascara and Fenty bronzer because I’m extra), and I’m good to goooo!

Beauty Bakerie Flour Setting Powder, in ‘Almond/ Chestnut’

This is going to sound crazy, but before I bought this , I had never ever used setting powder before. I don’t know why, but it never crossed my mind to set my makeup with powder, I just always went crazy with the setting spray and believed that was enough. The ‘Beauty Bakerie’ branding is so iconic and innovative, I’ve always admired it but never bought anything from them (and it’s black / woman owned!). I saw Amazon selling it for a reduced price so I just bagged it up instantly, and I am very glad I did! The shade matches my highlight shade so I use it to set my under-eyes and OH GOLLY it has now found a permanent place in my makeup routine. I have some crinkles around my eyes (especially when I smile), and so my highlight creases a LOT. But this little jar of joy has made it less noticeable. Also, it tones down the yellow undertones of my highlight, allowing it to suit my complexion better. My favourite use of this product is with my natural non makeup look. So after using the ‘Skin of Mine’ concealer, I lightly set it with this powder to make it transition better into my natural skin. I can’t believe it took me so long to start using a setting powder, but Beauty Bakerie’s Flour Setting Powder (I mean look at that branding – flour as in baking flour!) has a beautiful soft and smooth finish.

Creme of Nature Pure Honey Replenish and Strength Mask

I love buying new face and hair masks to pamper myself with. After trying out Creme of Nature’s ‘Dry Defence’ shampoo and conditioner, and using their edge control for years (eco styler? idk her), I was eager to try out their hair mask. I use hair masks as a deep conditioner, and so I divided my hair in 25 twists and went in with the product to ensure every strand of my hair was covered (thick and oily haired gals know the struggle of this). Then I wrapped up my hair to deep condition for an hour. After, I rinsed out all the product (quite thoroughly to ensure it didn’t get weighed down with leftover product), and felt my hair was super soft, with hardly any breakage. Usually I find it tiring to deep condition my hair, because after shampoo and conditioning on wash days I’m exhausted. Before you brand me as lazy, I have 4c natural hair. Now I find that the best routine is to shampoo/ condition on one day in the week, then 3-4 days later I’ll treat the mask a bit like a co-wash; deep conditioning with the product on it’s own and then rinsing it out fully. I’ve only used this a couple of times and have only just discovered this new routine, so I’ll be sure to update you with how it is going!

Denman Classic D3 Styling Brush

Finishing the list is another hair product gem. I honestly hate detangling my hair, not because I find it painful (in a weird and slightly twisted way, I like the pain), but because it is such a bore to do so. I usually just finger detangle my hair, but honestly I’m not very good at it. When I have to, I just run my hands through so it is detangled enough for me to braid. However, this is a really bad habit and it clearly does not contribute to the overall health of my hair. As finger detangling is getting more and more challenging, I bought a new brush to make life easier. I didn’t want to buy any fancy gimmicks that claimed to be the absolute ‘holy grail’ for natural hair, so I picked up a classic Denman brush from Boots. I’m glad I did so because now my hair is fully detangled, and it is so much easier to evenly distribute hair oils/ creams. I bought the D3 brush instead of D4 because I didn’t want to be tempted to drag the brush through my whole hair. A smaller brush means I am forced to section my hair and work with smaller portions! Definitely a new staple in my hair kit.
