And I liked it …
During the process of discovering what it means to be more sustainable, feeling a sense of discomfort whilst wearing fast fashion clothes is a very common feeling. This will also feed into the activity of buying any clothes at all, forcing you to make outfits and be more inventive with the clothes you already own. For my past self, this had never been an issue for me! After all, I was living indoors all the time, barely leaving my humble abode that doubled as a quiet little sanctuary; there was no need for me to worry about not having enough new clothes as the ability to rewear things were unlimited. However, since I began my relationship and ventured out exploring the world more with my boyfriend, the clothes already in my wardrobe didn’t seem like enough! The great contrast between being a hobbit to walking out of the door gave my wardrobe a big shock to its system. As I was creating outfits and dressing up, I was trying to ignore the dreaded moment of ‘running out of things to wear’. Whilst I know this is quite ludicrous and an impossible thing (as my boyfriend lovingly advised me), the desire to create more pretty outfits was looming over me.
But lo and behold. That moment finally arrived. And there I was, clothes all over the room, boyfriend on FaceTime and time: running out. I was getting ready for a family event, and out of options of what to wear. Until I stumbled upon a bright orange BooHoo co – ord that I had stuffed into the shameful corners of my wardrobe.
I always thought it never suited me, and the fact that it was from BooHoo was enough for me to neglect it. It ended up being the very thing I wrote to the event (mainly because I was complimented so kindly by my partner) and in return it reminded me of a very important thing.
If you take care of your clothes, add your own creative flairs and personal touches, enjoy how it makes you feel and look, it is okay to wear clothing from fast fashion brands. Whilst I am still opposed and dubious of mega hauls, wearing clothing once, hollow mass donations to vintage shops of poorly made garments to justify and continue participating in overconsumption, and peak trends/cores, one thing for sure is that being creative and wearing things you have previously shunned, and setting fun challenges to elevate and experiment with what you have already, can in some cases be more fun and rewarding than mindlessly scrolling on the internet and instantly purchasing an exact replica of the models outfit.
