Open back clothing is the easiest way to look alluring and mysterious. Covered up with an open element at the back. It is the go to outfit for that sly over the shoulder pose – and most importantly, the best way to ensure you don’t get too hot!
I will show you a wealth of different styles featuring this backless aspect. From fun and raunchy looks to more reserved and hidden, there are a ton of styles out there for you to try! Read on to find the backless style that’s perfect for you – and trust me, you will find a look that’s up your alley because I’ve got your back! ;).
STYLE 1: THE CHIC BACKLESS BLACK LOOK
Simple and chic. This is the style that allows the wearer to shine through their outfit, despite wearing all black. If you’re like me and you love to look sleek wearing all black looks, then this is for you. All black outfits are there typically for the purposes of concealing and hiding, but the backless part will not allow this to happen! With a large open portion on the back, you’ll definitely be seen!
MY CREATION OF THIS STYLE
For my look in this post I am wearing a black backless top I sewed, inspired by Look 16 in the Celine SS21 show. However, instead of making it glitzy and embellished, I kept it blank because I was more focused on the form and structure of it rather than the finish. Using the look as inspiration, I created a loosely fitted high neck backless crepe top. To make it backless, I swooped the material around my lower sides instead of higher up right beneath my armpit. When I was making this piece I was focused on the backless element, wanting it to be very liberating and freeing. I initially wanted to make a dress, but halfway through sewing it I realised I was really making a top instead! It was for this reason I ended up with a two piece look (I added in an old black skirt I had), and I actually like this better than the dress I had in mind originally.
As this was a smaller article of clothing I figured I could experiment a little bit more (without being worried about wasting a lot of fabric). I played around with shapes in this piece by curving the front of the top to make it into a smooth cut out half oval. This enhanced the sleekness of the whole look as there was no harsh lines or abrupt endings. I also designed the back of the top to melt in with the skirt; the back bottom of the top was made to be a little bit longer so it fell over my curves and blended into the black of the skirt. So I essentially created a look that mimics a front cut out dress.
I chose to create something in this style because it’s my fave; I love black styles so I couldn’t help but base my creation on this!
I paired this with a grunge makeup look inspired by Charli XCX – you can read more about this in my last beauty post!
(I’ve included more black backless pieces under the other styles too!)
STYLE 2: THE BACKLESS MAXI
Maxi dresses are so dreamy and flowy – and the backless feature only accentuates these characteristics. Whether you’re on the beach letting the light breeze take you away, or attending a formal event and wanting to look the upmost elegant – this style will make you stand out in all the best ways. Want to feel like the main character in the movie that is your life? Then these pieces are a must have for you!
These pieces would look great in the Summer Spring time! Or if you’re going to a hot country for the A/W seasons then don’t forget to pack yourself a stunning maxi backless dress!
STYLE 3: RAUNCHY BACKLESS + NIGHT OUT READY
Pandemic WHO (just kidding – do not cancel me xx; please be safe and hygienic when you are going back out again!). After a long time of being deprived from all types of a night out, these fun backless mini tops and mini dresses are a perfect way for you to get back in the scene! Make your comeback strong with a new twist in your look!
Pair any of these with glitzy heels and a sequin bag to really shine! Or you could dress it down a little by wearing high boots and a blazer like I have in my look!xx
STYLE 4: THE SUBTLE + SECRETIVE BACKLESS FEATURE
Despite not going completely backless, this style is equally as stunning as the others! Also, don’t think this look means playing it safe and keeping too reserved, for it’ll still transmit the same vibes of mystery and uniqueness. Whether it is a piece featuring a slightly lower backline, or something with a slight slit in the middle, it deserves to have a permanent place in your wardrobe!
Again, as mentioned above I have included *more* backless black styles here… Sorry! Can’t help it! I’m a Certified Lover of Black Clothing (CLB…C 😉 stream the album.).
If you’ve been a reader of my blog for a while now, then you’d be fully acquainted with the fact that I just can’t seem to stop wearing all black outfits! Considering how happy I am with my look of the first style I introduced in this post, I think it may be time for me to accept that all black outfits are simply my go to! Regardless of your style, you can definitely find a way to incorporate this backless feature. It may be extreme or so slight you have to squint to see – either way, it is an exciting element that can help to switch up your look!
Thank you for reading!! I hope you enjoy the piece I created and the outfits I have linked here! Stay tuned for my next post Xx
