An easy makeup look achieved with just 2 main products!
Ah, it’s the busiest stressful most wonderful time of the year. With Christmas around the corner (*coughs* 9 days!), I thought it’d be the most perfect idea for me to create a mini festive makeup look. Whilst I adore the complex makeup looks, with artists drawing miniature snowmen across their waterlines (amazing, honestly), I do have a soft spot for the more simple and minimal looks. And no, its not just because I’m not skilled enough to do those things (okay, maybe that’s part of the reason), but there’s just something about a one colour eyelid with a basic liner that just gets me going. In a way it’s deeply satisfying, just one shade filling up the whole lid – not too much going on but still achieving a pretty result.
So, as per usual, let’s start off the breakdown with the lids! As mentioned above I only used two main products for this: the eyeshadow and the gloss I applied on top. To get this glossy visual, I used a fluffy BH Cosmetics brush to sweep the classic red eyeshadow shadow all over my eyes. Seeing as this was the only colour I was using I made sure to fill the lid. Then I grabbed a generic lip gloss, applied it to a spare lip brush I had, and lightly dabbed it on my lids. Now, this process can be a little bit fiddly because of its stickiness. I applied it with a brush then went over with my index finger for a larger surface space, allowing me to disperse it evenly across my lids. Using a brush first just to apply the gloss is very helpful seeing as using your hands can be too messy. However, for blending the gloss out, fingers are a much better way to go as a large eyeshadow brush can pick up the product too much. The bottom line: apply with brush, blend out with a finger then voila!
I did feel as though a little something was missing. For it to be more of a Christmas makeup look I added in a white eyeliner to make the colour palette feel more complete. Staying true to the easiness of the look, I did a mini white wing liner, and cleaned it up with a black one too – mimicking the technique from one of my first beauty articles. This added black liner was really needed considering how working with this specific NYX eyeliner made things quite messy! It was a pot liner that went all over the place, with a lot ending up in my eyelashes. Thankfully this product has been discontinued. I’d recommend getting a pen liner too as they are easier to work with! I used the Pat McGrath black liner to help darken my lash line again, and then I absolutely bombarded my lashes with mascara. Nevertheless I am beyond happy with how it turned out!
The only slight caveat of this makeup look was how sticky it can be. Although it’s still pretty overall, this specific issue was with the creases – because it was so sticky, whenever I opened my eyes widely (large eyed people like me, please listen) a little bit of my lids will catch onto each other and cause the gloss to bunch up. On the flip side, it does looks slightly intentional! As if I purposely I added funky lines in the middle, in a different shade, adding a little razzle dazzle.
I must say, I’ve come a long way with doing my base. Shoutout to my sister for noticing this too! Before, i.e. when I was 15 just learning how to do makeup, I went totally crazy with my under-eye highlight. Full on violent ombré gradient down my face! But now, it’s so seamless and skin like! I’d like to say I don’t mean to brag or anything, but there are just some things you can’t resist on giving yourself kudos for. A lot of this growth is thanks to the Beauty Bakerie face powder I’ve incorporated in my routine. It’s a literal Godsend!
Whilst I wanted to go neutral and stick to the basics for this easy festive look (going for minimal effort here, saving time to wrap up more presents!), I couldn’t help but play around slightly with other bits. I mixed both my favourite blushes, but still went light with it (didn’t want to look like Rudolph sneezed on my face!). I am so glad I did so because it just looks perfect alongside the eyeshadow! I also went for a pigmented Kiko Milano gloss for my lips to make them look more rosy. This created the most lovely visual, not too overwhelming but sweet and subtle. Despite it still being minimal, it’s still a noticeable effect – even over a glitchy video call with my boyfriend it was still first thing he pointed out! After all, it is a festive makeup look so the rosiness was an absolute necessity.
I’m so glad with how this look turned out, so simple and requires absolutely no effort! Also, it’s so easy to change it up. Why not go for green and white or even the full shebang with green and red?! Also, another sweet little tip to those of you who made it to the end of the post, you can get different finishes depending on the lip gloss you opt for. For example, a red hued lipgloss can give the prettiest rosy sheer effect over a contrasting coloured eyeshadow, or a super glittery gloss will cause for super glittery lids!
Thank you so much for reading! I hope you enjoyed this mini makeup breakdown. Have a lovely Christmas!!
